This blog chronicles reports of print publications that have been discontinued in favor of sole digital delivery of the content once found on printed pages, or some other reincarnation of the print brand in an online format.
This site is not meant to commiserate or celebrate these events, but merely document them. It is a fact of our times that this is happening. We cannot predict the future, but we suspect that although print will die out in certain areas it will still live a long life in others. The internet did not kill television and the television did not kill radio. But with that said, there certainly are migrations from print to online delivery of content and we plan to collect reports of them here.
There are a few guidelines we use to add an announcement to our list:
- We do not include publications that end entirely, that is a product that no longer exists in the print or online worlds. This is not a timeline of failed products. It is a timeline of content-based products that are in a state of transition in their delivery medium from print to online only.
- When a print publication ends, generally two things can happen. One, an online counterpart product carrying the same or an overlap of the content becomes the sole delivery platform. Many times this online product already co-existed with the print publication. Two, the publisher may attempt to reincarnate the brand created by the print publication into a digital product. It may not be the exact same content online but it is an attempt to move the strength of the printed brand into the online world. We cover both of these cases.
We've categorized our list into the following:
- Rest in Peace (RIP). The publisher has decided to end the print publication but continue an online version of it.
- On Life Support. There has been some public announcement (either formal or informal) that indicates the publisher is thinking about ending the print publication but continuing it online.
- Other News. Other news related to this topic.
- We also have categorized each announcement by the format of the print publication: newspaper, magazine, book, and journal.
Last note, although we have used a blogging tool to chronicle these events, this is not really a blog. We want the date of the posts to mirror the announcement or the date of the last printed publication. Therefore if we learn about an event suitable for this site that happened in the past, we will back date it. Not a common practice in blogs for sure, but our goal here is to capture a timeline of events.
We are sure our list is incomplete. If you know of a product that has migrated from print to sole online delivery that is not covered here, please contact
